Bathtub Peach

Nana and I have a joke that everything is better in Japan, well at least when it comes to food it seems that the Japanese have mastered and perfected all kinds of cuisine that come from other cultures. Some examples come to mind such as french baking, whiskey, even 7-11 is better in Japan. Fruit is no exception to this idea, which may be surprising because you are probably thinking, "it's fruit, what's the big deal?"

Did you know some Japanese fruit can cost up to $100 per piece? They do not F(*% around with this stuff. Price is determined on ripeness and perfection of the melon, apple or peach and are treated similarly to a fine wine or olive oil. They have optimized the genetics, growing techniques, soil, water and sunlight to make some of the highest quality fruit on the planet.

My favorite story, being on tour with the orchestra in Japan in 2008, was when my friend, who is a world virtuoso cellist, pointed out that there were peaches for 600 yen or about six dollars at the time. He skeptically remarked, "what does a $6 peach taste like?" The peach was so juicy that it dripped all over him, not being prepared for the amount of juice it would generate. Since then, he called them "bathtub peaches" because they are so juicy that he believes it's best to take off all your clothes and eat them in the bathtub. I guess he's never heard of a napkin.

While we don't import Japanese peaches, we do have Moshi, Yuzu White Peach Soda, and Yuzu Original Soda that you can add to your meal when you order at TampopoKitchen.com
